I first met Yolanda in October 2013 when I attended the Cuban National Conference. There must have been some 55-60 people in attendance at the time. But, one thing for sure, Yolanda stood out in the crowd with her ever present smile and positive attitude.
She and I hit it off from the beginning and have since built an everlasting relationship as brother and sister in Christ. Yolanda was, and I guess still is, a well-known poet and author throughout much of Cuba, especially in her hometown of Jaguey Grande, Matanzas.
She and her husband, Eduardo were the perfect couple. He too, was a well-known author in the country. I remember first meeting Eduardo when he was in the early stages of dementia. He would always wear two watches for some reason I didn’t know, so I gave him the nickname of “Two Watch”.
Yolanda and Eduardo gave a huge part of their time to the Moravian Church in Jaguey working with the youth. Even though Alzheimer’s was quickly entering his body and mind, Eduardo would be by Yolanda’s side every minute possible.
